Toerist Modernist

Toerist Modernist was founded in 2019 by Gerlin Heestermans, and aims to put modernist heritage in Belgium on the map. From art deco over mid century to functionalism, brutalism, etc. - for such a small country we are spoiled with great architecture, and most of it stays unnoticed and under the radar. I intend to make these buildings accessible (both literally and figuratively) and bring them to people's attention.&nbsp;This guide features Gerlin’s&nbsp;12 best walks. In it, she takes you on a tour of cities that are reputed for their modernist architecture, such as&nbsp;Ostend, Liège and Brussels, but also to less obvious places, including&nbsp;Eeklo, Charleroi, Tournai and Mariakerke. Each walking tour is described in lavish detail and illustrated with photos of the façades and a map of the tour. The many superb interior shots of some of the houses along the various routes also offer a glimpse of the unique designs that are concealed behind their front doors. <ul><li style="font-size: 14px;">English</li></ul>

Catherine Lemblé (b. 1990, Belgium) is a&nbsp;pho­tog­ra­ph­er based in Brussels, Belgium. She received her MA in pho­tog­ra­phy from Luca School of Arts Brussels. Her first book Cabin Fever was self-pub­lished in 2019. Through ana­log pic­tures she depicts the ever-chang­ing rela­tion­ship between man and the nat­ur­al&nbsp;world.&nbsp;

WIP magazine returns for its landmark 10th edition. Spanning over 200 pages, it is the biggest issue to date and is presented with two covers. The first features New York musician CLIP, while the second draws from the issue’s central dossier Clockwatchers, which examines the future of work in the face of a looming climate crisis. 
 
They spoke to Baltimore musician Nourished By Time, Congolese sound and performance artist Cõvco, Brooklyn-based artist Diamond Stingily, and skater Maria Navarro in Madrid. Additionally, they visited Cameroon’s Jail Time Records, reconfiguring just what a record label can be, and in Taipei, we meet grillz artist Shiningmaker. Meanwhile in Reading, England, filmmaker Cieron Magat examines teenage boredom against the backdrop of a UK high street. They also step into artist Anthony Coleman’s warped world of pop culture references, and travel to the outskirts of America with photographer Robert Leblanc. 
 
Elsewhere, the S/S24 collection is shot by photographers Catherine LoMedico, Den Niwa, and Tolya Titaev. The issue closes with author Geoffrey Mak in conversation with Hua Hsu, and an interview with Tokyo-based writer and theorist W. David Marx.

Wandelen Langs Modernistische Architectuur in België

Valentine Schlegel

Conceived as a "bio-monograph", this catalogue offers a unique insight into the life and work of the French artist, sculptor and ceramist Valentine Schlegel. It features a large iconography, archives, and texts by sculptor and Schlegel specialist Hélène Bertin. 
Valentine Schlegel developed her constantly changing daily art practice between Paris and Sète. Like a Swiss Army knife, she eventually mastered several techniques, producing everyday objects with sculptural shapes that include wooden flatware, ceramic vases, leather bags, and plaster fireplaces. Designed without any inherent hierarchy, and often in collaboration with the artist's friends, this body of work is made up of objects in a range of sizes and uses, from the fantastic to the quotidian. Schlegel also created many architectural elements in plaster intended for home interiors. Because of their immovable nature, these sculptures for everyday life are also the reason why Schlegel's work has remained little known. If she did not address only the world of art exhibitions through her work, she was nevertheless part of historic events at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at a time when the Pompidou Center did not exist. 
Today, through Schlegel's practice, this publication, conceived as a "bio-monograph" devoted to Valentine Schlegel, seeks to highlight other addresses of art. Including new iconography and archival material, with biographical notes written by Hélène Bertin that provide readers with a clearer picture of both Schlegel and her approach, this reference monograph documents for the first time all of the fireplaces that Valentine Schlegel created for private homes—about one hundred from 1959 to 2002. The other aspects of her work are also discussed in order to understand the whole of her practice, intimately linked to her way of life, where the questions of autonomy of production and friendship are central.
